Edits - a new video editor from Instagram: what it is, how it works and why you should pay attention

On April 22, 2025, Instagram officially launched Edits, a full-featured video editing mobile app. It's Meta's answer to popular TikTok tools, including the infamous CapCut. But unlike third-party apps, Edits is fully integrated into the Instagram and Facebook ecosystem and is now available for free on iOS and Android.

Main features of Edits:

You can export videos without any Instagram branding and use them on any platform. So what about TikTok, how do you like it?)

High quality, resolution, fps, range settings.

  • Frame accuracy
  • Image animation using AI

  • Filters, stickers, fonts, transitions

Will videos with Edits perform better on Instagram?

Instagram has NOT officially confirmed that videos edited in Edits have priority in promotion. However:

  • Algorithms often take into account video quality, viewing duration, and attention span.
  • If the video is made with high quality and looks “native” to the platform, it has a higher chance of gaining reach.
  • The Edits app is optimized specifically for Instagram Reels, which will likely be taken into account by algorithms in the future.

What else are they planning to add to Edits?

Instagram has already confirmed a number of updates that will be coming soon:

►1. Keyframes

The ability to animate motion, scale, transparency, and other properties with precise control on the timeline opens the way to more complex, dynamic editing.

►2. Collaborative video editing

Multiple users will be able to work on the same video - perfect for teams.

►3. Voice effects

New voiceover effects, including AI voices, pitch shifting, radio effects, emotional delivery, and more.

►4. New fonts and text animations

Extensive library of stylish text effects, including animated titles, gradients, 3D effects, cinematic transitions

►5. Creative transitions between frames

Smooth or dynamic transitions to create dramatic videos - zoom in/out, glitch, swipe, fade, morph, etc.

►6. AI video stylization

A new feature that allows you to apply neural network-based styles to videos — for example:

  • make a video “like anime”
  • add an 80s movie effect
  • change colors and textures automatically
►7. “Ideas” and “Inspiration” tabs
  • In the “Ideas” tab, you can save drafts and notes.
  • In “Inspiration” - view popular Reels that are currently trending, with the ability to use their templates.
►8. Integration with Instagram API

The ability to auto-post, schedule posts, and track metrics directly from Edits is being tested for business accounts.

Many users are already used to: InShot and VN (simpler, faster, proven)

Most commercial videos will be edited in good old apps or using professional ones. Edits is currently in beta, and giving up editing on other platforms is not an option just to be “in trend”. Yes - competition is good - but it's like another tool - that you just need to integrate into your reels content plan today.

Consider Edits as a medium for ideas, inspiration, and partial editing of light and familiar content.
