Every day, ChatGPT processes about 66 million queries that can be classified as search queries. At first glance, the figure is really impressive, especially considering ChatGPT’s global popularity in the world. But if you compare it to the scale of Google’s work, the difference becomes striking: the search engine processes about 14 billion queries every day — that is, 210 times more. Even DuckDuckGo (a search engine that emphasizes privacy and does not track users) is ahead of ChatGPT in terms of the number of clicks, which demonstrates an important pattern: traditional search remains the main channel for obtaining information for most users.
This trend is aptly described by Rand Fishkin, CEO and co-founder of SparkToro (a marketing service that analyzes the behavior of online audiences). According to him, the indicators obtained as a result of the latest audit demonstrate that despite the growing interest in AI search, Google continues to dominate — and is unlikely to give up its positions in the coming years.

Despite ChatGPT's rapid growth, its scale cannot yet match the number of queries Google processes every day.
According to Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI and one of the key leaders in the field of artificial intelligence:
However, most of this growth is driven by API calls, i.e. companies implementing GPT into their products.
A Harvard and OpenAI study found that 21.3% of queries on ChatGPT have search intent, which equates to about 66 million queries per day. This is still small compared to Google, which is expected to handle 5 trillion queries in 2024 — or about 14 billion per day.
In March 2025, Fishkin estimated that Google searches were 373 times larger than ChatGPT. Even more interesting, a new study by SparkToro and Datos showed that when people start actively using artificial intelligence, their activity on Google also increases. In other words, ChatGPT is not replacing Google — it encourages even more people to turn to classic search.
This is a key insight for those who ask:
Does ChatGPT threaten Google's dominance in search?
Currently the answer is no.

Although AI search is developing rapidly, its actual impact on website traffic is still minimal.
According to BrightEdge: AI search today accounts for less than 1% of conversions — that is, ChatGPT and other models generate almost no real traffic compared to Google. At the same time, it was Google that launched the AI Overviews format, which “absorbs” some of the conversions and can really reduce traffic on individual pages. But this drop is not critical if the site has the right SEO architecture, high-quality content and correct optimization. With a competent SEO strategy, a business does not lose revenue from organic search results, even if some positions receive fewer conversions: traffic is redistributed, and commercial pages continue to convert stably.
Our experience with projects confirms that the decrease occurs in the information requests segment, while commercial traffic and sales figures show stability. Therefore, changes in AI Overviews affect the volume of views more than real business results.
Key takeaways for business and SEO:
All of these factors explain why ChatGPT's popularity does not mean its ability to replace classic search.
